‘Personal Jesus (Stargate Mix)’

Depeche Mode's classic 1989 track, 'Personal Jesus' has recently been remixed and re-released as a Stargate Mix and is now available as a free video download. This mix has shed all of its eighties electro-pop and replaced it with a more dance style back-track, whilst retaining the classic style and sound of the original song. Along with the remix is a brand new video for a modern audience. No longer featuring the band, the original video and classic late eighties styles have been replaced and the video is now set in a witch trial in the Middle Ages.
The video centres around a witch test carried out on a young woman as a group of scornful and heartless village elders lead her to the bridge where she is trussed up and thrown over. The girl is dipped and then let go, whereupon she sinks. The more surreal aspects of the video are then exploited as she rises out of the water to float above the villagers and release her wrath upon them in the form of boiling water from the river raining down. Irrelevant as this video might seem to the song, the video fits terribly well, exploiting and highlighting the lyrics as well as bringing a new level of darkness to what is already a fairly bleak song.
This dark and troubled view of the world is far more relevant to a modern audience than that of the original video. The free video download, 'Personal Jesus 2011' is entirely filmed in black and white and begins and ends with a shot of a sad looking young woman, except in the ending shot she is floating and has wreaked vengeance; in the first she is in chains. The video combines angst with the inevitable eroticism of bondage and period costumes. The girl's vulnerability is exploited as is the fact that she is dressed in a pale outfit and her captors in black with whiter than white ruffs. The symbolism is clear and Depeche Mode have clearly replaced an original video exploiting eighties fashion and formats with a far darker and more resonant video fitting for a modern audience.

A modern twist on medieval styles has created a stylised version of period fashion to go with the video and created a uniformed threatening style out of the witch hunters whist the 'witch' herself is dressed in a ragged dress that becomes conveniently see through when wet. When she rises out of the water, soaked and positively glowing with life, the video's fairly self-evident religious undertones become even more emphasised. The tortured girl's posture is that of a figure on a cross, the villagers who look up at her can only be struck with wonder at the sight of the floating half drowned girl. It is odd that it has taken a Middle Ages music video of this remix to take the song and place it firmly in the twenty first century. Available as a free video download, this is a must have for every fan's collection.
