Grizzly Bear ‘Ready, Able’

Tipped as the best track on their latest album ‘Veckatimest’, Grizzly Bear's ‘Ready, Able’ has been described as psychedelic, melancholy and experimental and is universally loved among fans of indie rock music. The band were recently supporting Radiohead, performing tracks from ‘Veckatimest’ and music critics have already begun to see a lot of Radiohead's classic material in Grizzly Bear.
The video to ‘Ready, Able’ is definitely unique as far as music videos go, appealing particularly to "YouTubers" seeking entertaining, beautifully tripped-out content. The setting is a bucolic, forest filled landscape and the characters that feature in it are emotionally expressive, multicoloured, clay models that vividly represent human beings. In the video, these clay models are caught melting in streams and being abducted by a UFO – the melting scenes are mesmerising and it's difficult to tell whether you should be feeling happy or sad. American artist, Allison Schulnik, is the director of the stop-motion video and it is her artwork that takes the form of the colourful, clay models.
‘Veckatimest’ is Grizzly Bear's third full length album, which was released in May 2009. The unusual name is said to have derived from a "tiny, uninhabited island on Cape Cod". The band found themselves not only "inspired" by ‘Veckatimest’ (the island), but they also particularly liked the "Native American name". Having played songs from this album at the East River State Park in New York City, the band managed to gain a mountain of praise from hip-hop's finest, Jay-Z, as he labelled them "incredible". Jay-Z also gave the whole indie rock scene a boost, claiming that what the "indie rock movement is doing right now is very inspiring" and that it would "push hip-hop to go even further". Jay-Z is not the only one singing praise for their new material however. Radiohead guitarist, Jonny Greenwood, applauded Grizzly Bear's efforts live on stage, claiming that they were his "favourite band". Almost shocked at Radiohead's admiration of the band, Grizzly Bear's Taylor and Christopher spoke of the experience in an interview, stating that "it was like a dream" and "opening for Radiohead was a huge honour for us".
When they're not supporting high flyers such as Radiohead, they're contributing their unique musical ability to America's most popular Mormon vampire soap, Twilight. Rock legend Michael McDonald has sung one of their songs, ‘Whilst You Wait For The Others’, taken from ‘Veckatimest’. Upon release, ‘Veckatimest’ outperformed its expectations and managed to reach number 8 on the US Billboard 200 chart. When asked how different this album was to Grizzly Bear's last album, ‘Yellow House’, drummer Christopher Bear commented that the material was "clearer and more accessible".
