Vampire Weekend ‘Cousins’

Perhaps one of the most underrated indie bands in recent times, Vampire Weekend return to the scene with their quirky image, unique style and brand new track ‘Cousins’. It's the first single on their second album, ‘Contra’, which is set to be released in early January, 2010. The track's beat is a subtle combination of Afro-pop, indie and punk and is guaranteed to be a song that sticks in your head for hours after hearing it.

The adrenaline-fuelled drums and fast-paced guitar riffs certainly do their job of fulfilling the high expectations that the band's fans expect from the American based rock band. The guitar melody sounds a little as if it may have been influenced by Dick Dale's ‘Misirlou’, which has previously been sampled in the song ‘Pump It’ by The Black Eyed Peas, but that aside, this is definitely a song that fans should look forward to listening to on their iPods, playing on their guitars, or even loading up on Guitar Hero (when it comes out).

Perhaps the most impressive thing about the song is the video. Filmed in Mexico City whilst the band were on tour, the video's individual style has audiences admiring the quick, quirky, unpredictable and satirical approach director Garth Jennings has taken. The single shot of the band members in a long alley, doused in confetti, aptly fits the songs manically festive and fast-moving tempo. As the video progresses, Ezra, Rostam, Chris and Chris trade places on a moving platform, playing guitars and singing. Off the platform features the remaining band members sitting on ladders and playing guitars and drum kits. The only slight criticism is that Kevin Godley, who has directed music videos for artists such as Sting, U2 and Blur, used a very similar filming technique for U2's track ‘The Sweetest Thing’, with Bono riding in the back of a carriage, staring into a camera.

Vampire Weekend's long-anticipated second album, ‘Contra’, is due to be released on the 12th of January, 2010 and the hype for it is already huge. It's set to be released, as with their first album, on XL Recordings. The cover of the album is definitely a talking point. It features a blonde woman wearing a Ralph Lauren polo top staring emotionlessly into the camera. In the video to ‘Cousins’, lead singer and guitarist, Ezra Koenig, is seen donning a Ralph Lauren shirt. This "preppy" image can perhaps be explained by the bands Ivy League roots and devotion to their oxford shirts, boat shoes and Colombian University education.
